Location and Elevation
Namunukula Mountain is located between the Badulla and Moneragala districts in the Uva Province of Sri Lanka. Standing at approximately 2,035 meters (6,676 feet) above sea level, it is one of the highest mountains in the province. The mountain’s nine peaks give it a distinctive profile, with the highest peak being the most popular among climbers. Due to its altitude, the summit experiences cool temperatures, heavy rainfall, and frequent morning fog, especially during monsoons.

The mountain features lush vegetation, tea plantations, forests, and occasional grasslands. It is home to a variety of endemic and medicinal plant species. Wildlife includes endemic birds, reptiles, insects, small mammals, and a diverse range of butterflies.
Hiking Details
The main trail begins at the Namunukula Tea Estate or from nearby villages. The hike is considered medium to demanding due to steep inclines and uneven paths. A typical trek to the summit takes around 4–5 hours, rewarding hikers with panoramic views of Uva Province, surrounding valleys, and on clear days, distant peaks such as Piduruthalagala.
Cultural Significance and History
Local legends portray Namunukula as a mountain of spiritual significance, with tales of hidden treasures and sacred connections. The tea plantations surrounding the mountain were established during the British colonial period and remain vital to the local economy.

The nearest town is Badulla, approximately 15–20 kilometers away. The mountain is accessible by public transport or private vehicles, although the road near the base can be bumpy.
